Egg prices
According to Jeanette E. Walnert, the prices at farmers markets are higher, but the quality of the food is much better. The time it takes to go from shipment to shelf in farmers markets is faster than supermarkets by days. Even though the prices are proportionate to the quality of the eggs, the aren’t always. Our goal is to find you the cheapest eggs of the best quality.
According to a source from the LA times, there was a new ban in Los Angeles on crowding henhouses. This allows the chickens to live better because they aren't crowded together anymore, but is also the basis for false advertisment. Even though the farmhouses are less crowded, which is great, this doesn't mean that the chickens are necessarily treated well. The chickens are still commonly not allowed to graze freely, and are most definitely not free range, as it may say on the signs in markets, although they are techincally cage free.
The graph below shows the variation in average prices for eggs between farmers markets and supermarkets.
Many things that factor into egg prices are quality, how the chickens are treated, and even Easter. During Easter, the egg demand is much higher and prices at farmers markets, where people can get extra fresh eggs, are through the roof.
